TRYING TO GET THE RIGHT SELFIE...
YOU USE THEIR IPOD TO TAKE YOUR SELFIE PHOTO. THEY USE A CERTAIN PHOTO APP THAT TRANSFERS THE DIGITAL IMAGE TO THE PRINTER!
This place is located on Haji Lane which has many other cute gift shops and trendy clothes shops. Pretty hipster for the young and fashionable, this street kind of reminds me of The Lab Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa (Orange County, CA). I knew about this place thanks to Timothy Delaghetto's Instagram and apparently also knew about it before most Singaporeans even knew that drinking your self(ie) was possible.
So what is a Selfie? If you don't already know, it's a photo that you take of yourself or sometimes a photo you take of yourself with others without asking anyone else's help. Usually, the front camera is used so you know exactly what you look like and can give the best pose! I mean... I'm not like an expert on selfies or anything...
*Side Note: When I visited Korea in 2012, everyone was doing selfies. It's actually called "Selca" over there short for "Self Camera". At cafes, restaurants, etc. I would see girls taking selfies of themselves for such a long time while they are with their friends. But damn, they sure do look good in their photos. I kind of thought it was strange though because instead of conversing with friends, I'd mostly see them take photos...of themselves...A few years later somehow the word "Selfie" got popular in America and we're all doing it. So, I guess it's okay for me to take a few selfies here and there without anyone judging me too much now...
Selfie Coffee takes the #selfie craze to a whole new level that allows you to DRINK YOUR SELF...IE. You basically have your own face on top of a drink! This reminds me of those Asian boba shops that have the kawaii plastic lids heat-sealed on top of the cups! But now you get to customize the lid yourself with your own face! Remember, you can take the photo with friends or of other things! It doesn't need to be a selfie!
So how does it work?
- Choose any Frappe or a Hot/Cold drink.
- Only these can have your Selfie printed because only these have foam
- Selfie drinks are $8 Singaporean Dollars (SDG) which is about $6 USD
- The workers recommend the Frappe because the foam stays more intact since it's an ice blended drink underneath the foam.
- This way, your photo will stay intact too!
- Take your best selfie
- You take the photo with #Selfie Coffee's ipod. There is a photo app on there that they use so it's not the normal Ipod Camera.
- If you don't like the photo? Take it again! I took like 5 different photos and had to ask my friend Sengkwann to choose among them...
- Find a seat
- It will take a few minutes for your photo to print!
- You get a buzzer that buzzes once your drink is finished
- Pick up your drink and take lots of selfies of your self with your selfie before you sip away!
It may be gimmicky but it's worth a try at least once! I ended up ordering the Matcha Frappe. The matcha was sweet but the drink honestly wasn't too great. It tasted normal and nothing special. As a normal drink without the Selfie gimmick, $8 SGD is a bit too steep and I'd rather just go to Starbucks. However, having the opportunity to drink yourself... show off your selfie drink to others... and having fun destroying your face by poking the foam and drinking the foam is just too much fun. The foam itself tasted good too. It didn't taste like ink or anything weird. It tasted a bit sweet and like those Whipped brand whipped cream you can find at the grocery stores.
BY THE WAY, IF YOU'RE GONNA GET A DRINK I TOTALLY RECOMMEND THE COLD / FRAPPE DRINKS ANYWAYS BECAUSE SINGAPORE IS SO SO HOT AND HUMID. THE COLD DRINK WILL AT LEAST REFRESH YOU!
