SOME OF MY FAVE VIET DISHES ! @ OC LAU RESTAURANT - GARDEN GROVE

ADDRESS:
10130 Garden Grove Blvd Ste 111-113 Garden Grove, CA 92844
(In the same plaza as Genki Living, Frozen Bar, and Volcano Tea)

THIS IS A SPECIAL CLAM DISH NOT YET ON THEIR MENU. ASK FOR THE CLAM SPECIAL! THERE WERE CLAMS IN EACH SHELL!

TASTES LIKE CHICKEN! THESE ARE FRIED BUTTERED FROG LEGS. EATING IT BROUGHT MY BACK MEMORIES OF VIETNAM. THEY ARE SOOOOO GOOD!

OC MONG TAY (RAZOR CLAMS) IS A NEW FAVE!

THIS IS A KUMQUAT LEMONADE. NUOC TAT CHANH IN VIETNAMESE I THINK. IT IS ALSO NOT YET ON THE MENU. IF YOU LIKE KUMQUAT, GET THISSS! I WISH I HAD MORE BECAUSE I FINISHED SIPPING IT SUPER FAST (WHY IS THEIR STRAW SO BIG..)

BO NE (DODGING COW?!) THIS IS THE FILET MIGNON WITH MUSHROOMS WHICH COMES WITH BREAD!

This place is always crowded! And now I know why you most likely will always have to wait at least half an hour for this place! Because, this place serves some of the best Vietnamese dishes in my opinion! Aren't you tired of the usual Pho, Bun Bo Hue, etc. ?! This place offers the more exotic side of Vietnamese cuisine: escargot, clams, and frogs.

This place has fast service which is good because there are so many parties waiting outside to get a seat so the faster the better right? But, you don't feel rushed to finish eating quickly! The servers will keep coming back to you to ask you how y'all doin. This is a shock to me because normally Vietnamese Restaurants have practically no customer service like this. No wonder why this place is popular!

Aside from the service, let's get to the most important: THE FOOD!

Most of the dishes that I ordered here are basically dishes that I unfortunately do not have the chance to eat often because my mom doesn't prepare these at home. I had exposure to most of these foods when I visited Vietnam more than a decade ago, but the food memories still remain on my taste buds. I remember having some really exotic foods in Vietnam untypical of the pho, banh mi, etc. When I saw that this restaurant finally opened within biking distance of my house, I JUST HAD TO TRY IT!  I've been craving frog legs ever since ever!

Here's a food recap:
  • Buttered Fried Frog Legs:
    • legitttttt ! These are awesome and they taste like chicken! My bf doesn't usually eat these, but I like to believe that I got him to warm up to the idea of eating frogs.
    • Bf, " Don't you think these taste like chicken?" My answer was yes but he replied back saying, "Why don't we just eat chicken then?" Well... frogs are tastier!
    • overall: WORTH IT
  • Razor Clams:
    •  This was the second time that I've ever had these clams (and I was already really blown away from my first experience)
    • They put a looooooot of peanuts
    • They may taste mostly like peanuts but with a chewy texture from the clams
    • I prefer getting it from my friend's restaurant (Ngoc Thuy Vietnamese Restaurant which is also on GG BLVD)
  • Bo Ne (Filet Mignon):
    • bombbbbb! The meat is soft and I love the mushroom sauce and caramelized onions!
    • The bread could have been better... it actually disappointed me. It didn't taste fresh or at least it didn't seem like they even put it in the oven so it'd be hot and crispy.
    • thumbs up for the meat, but thumbs down for the bread
  • Clams
    • these were really good!
    • I like the sauce that they use (sorry, I forgot what it was)
    • the one I ordered is off the menu so ask about off menu items!
  • Kumquat Lemonade
    • soooooooooo good! It's sweet and sour. I would def. get it again!
    • this is NOT on the menu
    • I also saw many other drinks on the menu that sounds super delicious. Will have to try those some other time!

This place basically satisfied my longing for Vietnamese food that I haven't had in yeaaaaaaars. The fried frog legs, especially were my favorite because I just loooooooove how they taste!! I recommend this place, but try not to go at night time because it gets CROWDED and you may have to wait up to 2 hours!
